Increased use of natural gas for power production
Total use of natural gas in Norway was 6 598 million standard cubic metres in 2010. A total of 4 659 million standard cubic metres was used by crude petroleum and natural gas production industries, primarily offshore. A total of 1 010 million standard cubic metres natural gas was used for the production of electric power on the mainland.
Use of natural gas for the production of electric power on the mainland increased by 23 per cent from 2009.
A total of 110 billion Sm3 of natural gas was produced in 2010; a 3.1 per cent increase from the previous year. From this, as much as 92 per cent was exported. A total of 6 598 million Sm3 of natural gas was used in Norway. Seventy per cent of this was used in crude petroleum and natural gas production industries.
Use of natural gas for power production and district heating is increasing, and was 10 018 and 179 respectively in 2010. This is an increase of 32 and 29 per cent from the year before. See the fact box below for conversion between Sm3 and GWh.
Increased net domestic consumption
Net domestic consumption of natural gas was 9 047 GWh in 2010, including natural gas used for non-energy purposes. This is a 12.6 per cent increase from the year before and constituted 4.1 per cent of net domestic consumption of energy. See Energy balance and energy accounts .
Relatively low net domestic consumption compared to other countries
Compared to other countries, figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA) show that net domestic consumption of natural gas in Norway, including natural gas used for non-energy purposes, is relatively low. While the average for OECD countries was 7 282 kWh per capita in 2008, the corresponding figure for Norway was 2 094 kWh per capita.
Natural gasNatural gas is gas in gas form or as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). LNG and CNG is the same product as natural gas in gas form, but is liquefied or compressed due to transport or storage reasons. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gases) is not included in these natural gas statistics. LPG and other energy carriers are covered in Energy balance and energy accounts . |
Conversion from Sm3 to GHh
Standard cubic metres (Sm3) is a volume unit of measure and is calculated at approximately 15 °C and approximately 1.01325 bar (1 atm.) pressure. The energy content of natural gas can change slightly in different years, but the changes are small. Theoretic energy content in natural gas in 2010, calculated as net calorific value (NCV): 35.69 TJ/million Sm3.
For conversion from Sm3 to GWh the calculation is: Million Sm3 x 35.69 /3.6 |
