Lower consumption of natural gas

Total use of natural gas in Norway was 5 709 million Sm3 in 2012. This is nearly 3 per cent lower than 2011. A total of 4 257 million Sm3, or 75 per cent, was used by crude petroleum and natural gas production industries, primarily offshore.

Use of natural gas for power production and district heating was 476 and 22.4 Sm3 respectively in 2012. This is a decrease of 34 per cent for power plants and a 21 per cent increase for district heating plant.

Increased net domestic consumption

Net domestic consumption of natural gas was 440 Sm3 in 2012, excluding natural gas used for non-energy purposes. This is a 12.2 per cent increase from the year before.

Higher production of natural gas

A total of 119 billion Sm3 of natural gas was produced in 2012; a 12 per cent increase from the previous year.

Relatively low net domestic consumption compared to other countries

Compared to other countries, figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA) show that net domestic consumption of natural gas in Norway, including natural gas used for non-energy purposes, is relatively low. While the average for OECD countries was 7852 kWh per capita in 2010, the corresponding figure for Norway was 2043 kWh per capita.
