Index of orders in manufacturing (discontinued)Q1 2000

Statistics Norway has decided to stop the publication of the Index of orders in manufacturing from the first quarter of 2018. One reason for this was that the statistic previously was a part of Eurostat's regulation for short-term statistics, but this requirement was removed from the regulation in 2012. However, indicators for new orders and stock of orders are available in Business tendency survey for manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

Prices improve the order situation

The order based industry reports a 5 per cent growth in new orders received during the past year. The increase is due to a rise in exports, whilst the domestic market has reduced its orders by 7 per cent. Compared with the last quarter the new orders received are less in both markets.

The total stock of orders has been reduced by 17 per cent over the last four quarters. A failing domestic market has mainly caused the drop, but exports are also down. Compared with the 4th quarter 1999 the value has somewhat improved due to an increase in the reserve for the export market.

Basic metals have over the past three quarters registered an upswing in the value of both new orders received and stock of orders. In total the new orders received increased by 26 per cent compared with the same quarter last year. The growth is most pronounced for non-ferrous metals, with a 38 per cent higher increase. Higher prices for aluminium, nickel and copper during the last four quarters have been a major contributor to this development.
