Index of orders in manufacturing (discontinued)Q3 2002

Statistics Norway has decided to stop the publication of the Index of orders in manufacturing from the first quarter of 2018. One reason for this was that the statistic previously was a part of Eurostat's regulation for short-term statistics, but this requirement was removed from the regulation in 2012. However, indicators for new orders and stock of orders are available in Business tendency survey for manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

Marked decline in new orders

New orders continued to decline throughout the third quarter of 2002. This was due to less demand in the domestic and export market. Total stocks fell slightly from the second quarter 2002. A moderate growth is reported in the total stocks in the export market.

New orders received and unfilled orders. Unadjusted. 1995=100

Recorded figures for the third quarter 2002 show that the new orders received kept decreasing for the order-based industry, and are now approximately 18 per cent lower than in the corresponding quarter last year. Domestic demand must be characterized as weak, much due to failing influx of orders within the industries Transport Equipment and Oil Platforms and Modules. The combination of low activity and strong Norwegian currency resulted in slight demand from the export market.

In the 3r d quarter 2002 the execution degree from domestic orders was considerable higher than the influx, whereas the opposite was the case for non-domestic orders. The total stock of orders is about 11 per cent lower than in the third quarter last year.
