Small changes in production

According to seasonally adjusted figures the manufacturing output has had only small changes during the first quarter of 2002 compared with the previous quarter. The capital goods output has increased. However the manufacturing output decreased from February to March.

Oil platforms and modules and transport equipment have contributed to the increase of the capital goods output. The intermediate goods output has had a minor decrease. Pulp, paper and paper products and refined petroleum products and chemicals and chemical products have had an increase in the production output. Basic metals output has had a 3.6 per cent decrease related to shortages of demand and increased competition. The consumer goods output has had a 0.9 per cent increase.

From February to March 2002

The consumer goods have nevertheless contributed to the drop in manufacturing output from February to March. This is related to the activity in the food products and publishing, printing and reproduction. The engineering industries have seen an increase, except from the electrical and optical equipment industries. The Easter holiday was in April last year and in March this year. Rates of changes from the weekly-adjusted figures do not take this into account. Seasonally adjusted figures for March this year from publishing and printing and from the engineering industries must be evaluated carefully.

Oil and gas output

The oil and gas production has decreased by approximately 10 per cent from February to March. This is related to the previously announced plan from the Norwegian government of reduction in the oil production for 2002. The reductions have been effectuated in March this year.
