Growth in manufacturing

The output in manufacturing increased by 1.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the third quarter, according to seasonally adjusted figures. This was due to a growth within the capital goods and consumer goods output.

The output in capital goods saw a 4.1 per cent improvement during this last period. A significant growth has taken place within oil platform and modules. These changes came from a high level of activity related to the Norwegian Continental shelf and to constructions and installations on land. Transport equipments and fabricated metal products have also seen an increase in production.

Consumer goods

The consumer goods output experienced a 2.0 per cent growth in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the third quarter. Food products and publishing, printing and reproduction saw an improvement, while the production of furniture decreased.

Intermediate goods

The intermediate goods output had a 0.5 per cent increase during the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the third quarter. The production of wood and wood products saw a 3.0 per cent improvement.

However there was a downturn in basic chemicals, basic metals and pulp, paper and paper products, caused by lower demand and increased competition from abroad. Also non-ferrous metals saw a minor drop during the last period.

Improvement during 2005

The output in manufacturing saw a 2.5 per cent growth in 2005 compared with 2004, according to unadjusted figures. This was due to a 5.8 per cent growth within capital goods. Transport equipment and oil platforms and modules have contributed to this improvement. Building and equipping of ships, as well as the high level of activity within oil platform and modules, has contributed positively to the latter part of the engineering industries in Norway. These industries have also seen a slightly increased demand from abroad during 2005. Lower demand and increased competition from abroad have contributed negatively to the intermediate goods output in 2005, but wood and wood products saw a significant growth during 2005.

Industrial production in the euro-zone

From November 2004 to November 2005 there was a 3.7 per cent growth in the Norwegian manufacturing output. The industrial production rose by 2.6 per cent in the euro-zone during the same period, according to figures from Euro stat.
