Continued growth in capital goods

The output in manufacturing had a 0.9 per cent increase in the third quarter this year compared with the second quarter, according to seasonally adjusted figures. This was due to a continued upturn within capital goods output.

The output in capital goods experienced a 2.4 per cent growth in this last period. Record high investments in oil and gas activity during 2006 have contributed to a continued growth in oil platforms and modules and in fabricated metal products. Increased demand from abroad, according to statistics on new orders, has also contributed to the rise within fabricated metal products. These changes have had significant positive consequences for the rest of the engineering industries.

Oil platform and modules

The activities within oil platforms and modules are now on a record level in the third quarter of 2006 and are significant higher than in previous periods with large investments in oil and gas activity. Several enterprises have seen further increases in their staff in the last quarter. Electrical and optical equipment have also had an increase in production, while machinery and equipment saw a minor decrease.

Compared with the previous period, the output in intermediate goods rose by a 0.6 per cent in the third quarter of 2006. Basic chemicals as well as rubber and plastic products saw an increase in the output together with wood and wood products. Basic metals and pulp, paper and paper products have had a minor decrease in the production.

The consumer goods output had 1.2 per cent growth in the third quarter this year compared with second quarter. Food products and publishing and printing have had an increase in the production while furniture had a drop in the output.

Norway and the euro-zone

From August 2005 to August 2006 there was a 6.1 per cent growth in the Norwegian manufacturing output. The industrial production rose by 5.4 per cent in the euro-zone during the same period, according to figures from Eurostat .
