Growth in manufacturing

Norwegian manufacturing experienced an increase of 2.3 per cent from September to November 2006 when compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally adjusted figures. All main groupings, except energy goods, contribute to the rise.

Manufacturing of capital goods in the very same period had an increase of 2.8 per cent. This is partly due to the high level of activity within transport equipment as well as machinery and equipment n.e.c. Statistics on new orders show that stocks are especially high for building and fitting of supply boats for the Norwegian oil sector. At the same time there has been an increase in demand from abroad for Norwegian engineering products. Oil platforms and fabricated metal products continue to increase in the period from September to November 2006, 2.9 and 3.4 per cent respectively, compared to the previous period. Only electrical and optical equipment experienced a decrease in the last three-month period.

Increase for intermediate and consumer goods

Intermediate goods increased by 2.7 per cent in the last three-month period compared to the previous period in 2006. Wood and wood products experienced a rise of 7.4 per cent. This growth is mainly due to the high level of activity within construction in Norway. Basic chemicals and non-ferrous metals show only minor changes within the same period when compared to the previous three-month period. Pulp, paper and paper products experienced an increase of 2.7 per cent succeeding negative figures in previous periods in 2006.

Compared with the previous three-month period, consumer goods show an increase of 0.9 per cent in the three-month period from September to November. Food products, beverages and tobacco show a decrease, 2.1 per cent, whereas publishing, printing and reproduction show an increase in output along with furniture and other manufacturing.

Norway and the euro-zone

According to figures adjusted to length of month, there was a 7.5 per cent growth in the Norwegian manufacturing output from October 2005 to October 2006. The industrial production in the Euro zone increased by 3.6 per cent in the same period, according to figures from published by Euro stat .
