Drop in manufacturing output

Manufacturing output dropped by 1.4 per cent from the second to the third quarter of 2008, according to seasonally adjusted figures. However, the upturn in capital goods output has continued.

The production of intermediate goods dropped by 3.0 per cent from the second to the third quarter this year. The output in wood and wood products as well as other non-metallic mineral products went down due to a fall in the total building activity in Norway. Refined petroleum products, and chemicals and chemical products also had a drop in the production, while non-ferrous metals saw an increase in the third quarter compared with the second quarter of 2008.

Still growth in capital goods output

According to seasonally adjusted figures the output in capitals goods went up by 3.1 per cent in the third quarter compared with the second quarter of 2008. The significant positive developments within machinery and equipment as well as in oil platforms have continued due to the still high level of stocks in manufacturing. The production in transport equipment went slightly down.

The consumer goods output declined by 2.9 per cent in the third quarter compared with the second quarter of 2008. Food products saw a fall in the output together with a drop in the production of furniture in Norway.

Unchanged from August to September 2008

According to seasonally adjusted figures, manufacturing output was unchanged from August to September this year. The output of capital goods increased by 0.4 per cent, while the production of consumer goods went up by 2.9 per cent.

Growth since September 2007

The output in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 2.5 per cent from September last year to September this year, according to working-day adjusted figures. Capital goods output expanded by 14.2 per cent during this period, while the production of consumer goods was reduced by 1.6 per cent.

Norway and the euro area

There was a 2.8 per cent growth in Norwegian manufacturing output from August 2007 to August 2008, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the euro area dropped by 1.0 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat .
