Considerable decrease in production
Output in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 2.8 per cent in November 2008 to January 2009 compared to August to October 2008, according to seasonally adjusted figures. This was due to the drop in demand in both domestic and foreign markets caused by the financial crisis.
As a result, output in wood and wood products and basic metals decreased considerably during the last three months. Pulp, paper and paper products and basic chemicals also experienced a significant drop in output in November 2008 to January 2009 compared to the previous three months.
Growth in machinery due to high levels of total stocks
Continued high levels of total stocks in the Norwegian oil industry provided the base for a further growth in machinery during the last three-month period. On the other hand, the output in the ship, boat and oil platform industry decreased slightly compared to the previous three-month period. Difficulties in the Norwegian and international automotive spare parts industries are the major cause of a large decrease in the transport equipment industry during the same period.
Output in food products increased by 0.5 per cent during the last three-month period, while the furniture industry decreased considerably.
From January 2008 to January 2009
The output in manufacturing decreased by 4.0 per cent from January 2008 to January 2009, according to working-day adjusted figures. In this period the output in basic metals and wood and wood products decreased considerably, while the output in machinery and building of ship and oil platforms increased strongly.
From December 2008 to January 2009
Output in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 1.3 per cent from December 2008 to January 2009, according to seasonally adjusted figures. The pronounced drop in the basic metal and wood and wood products industries continued into January. These industries have reduced production considerably due to the extraordinary weak market situation.
Norway and the euro area
There was a 2.2 per cent decrease in Norwegian manufacturing output from December 2007 to December 2008, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the euro area dropped by 13.6 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat .

Important announcement: New industry classificationA new version of Norwegian industry classification (SIC2007) was implemented in January 2009. The most important change concerning the Index of production is that publishing and recycling is no longer included in the manufacturing industries. In addition, there are other changes that affect the publication levels. For instance some establishments in the engineering industries have been classified in a new industry called Repair and installation of machinery. Use this link for a general overview of the transition to the new industry classification . |
New base yearThe base year used in the calculation of the Index of production has been changed to 2005=100 |
Improved method of seasonal adjustmentThe new routine takes into account the Norwegian calendar and thereby improves the quality of the seasonally adjusted results. The change has been applied from the January 2009 publishing, and concerns the pre-treatment method (calendar adjustment). The old method adjusted for working-days and for moving holidays (Easter, Pentecost, Ascension Day), leap year and outliers. The new method also adjusts for fixed Norwegian public holidays (1 January, 1 and 17 May) and for the Christmas holiday (24-26 December). |
