Further decrease in manufacturing output
Seasonally adjusted figures show that the output in Norwegian manufacturing went down by 3.1 per cent in the period December 2008 to February 2009, compared to September to November 2008. This was due to the downturn in demand following the financial crisis.
By now, basic metals and paper and paper products, together with basic chemicals, have been most affected by the crisis. The output in basic metals went down by 12.2 per cent from December 2008 to February 2009, compared with the previous three months. Wood and wood products also saw a significant drop in output due to the overall fall in building activity in Norway late last year and into this year.
Capital goods output
Seasonally adjusted figures show that machinery and equipment, together with building of ship, boats and oil platforms, had a 1.2 and 0.6 per cent growth in the output in the period December 2008 to February 2009, compared with the previous three months. The production of capital goods was almost unchanged in this period, thus limiting the drop in manufacturing output into 2009.
The output in food products saw only minor changes, and went down by 1.9 per cent from December 2008 to February 2009, compared with the previous three months. Furniture had a more substantial drop in the production in this last period.
