Pronounced decrease in production
Output in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 2.8 per cent in February to April 2009 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.
This is a result of the downturn in demand in both domestic and foreign markets following the financial crisis. This has led to a 9.9 per cent decrease in basic metals and 7.3 per cent decrease in wood and wood products during the previous three-month period. The paper and paper products industry has also been hit by the crisis and experienced a 10.6 per cent decrease in output in February to April 2009 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Furthermore, the output in fabricated metal products and computer and electrical equipment dropped during the period. On the other hand, production of ships, boats and oil platforms increased in February to April 2009 compared with the previous three-month period.
Decrease in food products
Production of food products decreased by 1.6 per cent in February to April 2009 compared with the previous three-month period.
April 2008 to April 2009
The output in manufacturing decreased by 10.6 per cent from April 2008 to April 2009, according to working-day adjusted figures. This is the largest drop in production since the financial crisis on a year-to-year basis. For example, production of basic metals and wood and wood production decreased by 28.0 and 26.0 per cent respectively. In the same period, production of ships, boats and oil platforms and machinery and equipment n.e.c. increased by 4.0 and 5.3 per cent respectively, while production of food production dropped by 3.1 per cent.
Due to the Easter holiday, care should be taken when comparing the index of production for March and April 2009 with the corresponding months in 2008. The seasonally and working-day adjusted indices takes Easter into account, but it is difficult to correct for the increased use of temporary disruption of production caused by the difficulties in Norwegian manufacturing. Therefore, the seasonally-adjusted index for March and April is more uncertain than the seasonally-adjusted indices for the other months. |
From March to April 2009
Output in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 1.4 per cent from March to April 2009, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. In this period the output in basic chemicals and non-ferrous metals decreased by 3.4 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively, while output in machinery and equipment n.e.c. increased slightly.
Norway and the Euro area
There was a 3.2 per cent decrease in Norwegian manufacturing output from March 2008 to March 2009, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the Euro area dropped by 20.6 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat.
