Increase for manufacturing
Industrial production went up 2.3 per cent in August to October compared to May to July 2009, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.
Food products, basic chemicals and non-ferrous metals contributed to the growth within manufacturing. This was related to a significant increase in the export of fish (see External merchandise trade ), a slight increase in demand for aluminium and growth in production in the solar industry. On the other hand, wood and wood products went down by 2.4 per cent in the same period. This was related to a decrease in house-building in Norway in 2009 (see Building statistics ). Computer and electrical equipment decreased by 1.7 per cent in the same period.
Engineering industries and ships, boats and oil platforms
Output in repair, installation of machinery, ships, boats and oil platforms and machinery and equipment n.e.c increased in the last three months, while output in transport equipment n.e.c went down in the same period. Due to the stocks of unfilled orders, the industries related to machinery and equipment and ships, boats and oil platforms were able to maintain a substantial level of activity. However, according to Statistics on new orders for the third quarter of 2009 these stocks are in significant decline due to a downturn in new orders received.
