Growth in industrial production

Production in manufacturing increased by 2.0 per cent from June to August compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Index of production for manufacturing January 2005-August 2010, 2005=100.

Manufacturing. Seasonally adjusted. Three-month moving average 2003-2010.

This development is partly due to a strong growth in June 2010. Output in wood and wood products as well as basic chemicals increased significantly during the last three-month period. The upturn in wood and wood products is due to increased building activity in Norway (see statistics on construction, new orders ), while the development in basic chemicals is influenced by increasing demand and further growth within the Norwegian solar industry. Output in ships and oil platforms went up, while fabricated metal products as well as transport equipment saw a slight decrease in production. There was also a minor decrease in food products.

Interpretation seasonal adjusted figures

In order to facilitate the interpretation of the short-term development, the index of production publishes three-month moving averages of the seasonally-adjusted figures. We normally compare the latest non-overlapping three-month periods (for instance June to August compared with March to May).

From August 2009 to August 2010

Output in manufacturing went up by 2.6 per cent from August 2009 to August 2010, according to working-day adjusted figures. This development is due to a significant increase in basic chemicals, wood and wood products as well as basic metals. There has been a slight decrease in ships, boats and oil platforms, machinery and equipment and fabricated metal products. This development is connected to a decrease in unfilled orders since the second quarter of 2009 (see statistics on new orders ).

From July to August 2010

Output in Norwegian manufacturing went down by 2.0 per cent from July to August 2010, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Basic chemicals, wood and wood products as well as basic metals were the main contributors to this development. Monthly changes must be interpreted with caution. This is particularly important for basic chemicals due to the lack of a consistent seasonal pattern in this industry. Computer and electrical equipment as well as repair and installation of machinery also saw a decrease in production.

Norway and the euro area

There was a 6.6 per cent increase in Norwegian manufacturing output from July 2009 to July 2010, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the euro area increased by 7.8 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat .
