Decline in Norwegian manufacturing

Production in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 0.4 per cent from August to October 2013 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. This decline must partly be seen in context of record high output levels in previous months such as June and July 2013. On a month to month basis, from September to October 2013, the production in manufacturing went down by 0.6 per cent.

Important manufacturing industries have experienced a decline in production in the last three-month period. From August to October 2013, industries such as ships, boats and oil platforms and repair and installation of machinery have seen a clear production downturn compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures . The decrease in these industries can partly be related to the completion of several large projects and a fall in new orders. The decline in new orders is related to the fact that several new and large projects have lately been allocated to firms abroad. Machinery and equipment, on the other hand, saw a minor increase in production from August to October 2013 compared with the previous period.

Increase in export-related manufacturing

Improved demand abroad has given a basis for new production growth for industries such as basic chemicals and non-ferrous metals. According to seasonally-adjusted figures, these industries experienced a production growth of 2.1 and 4.7 per cent respectively from August to October 2013, compared with the previous three-month period. In addition, food and food products also saw a minor increase in production in the same period.

Decline in manufacturing from September to October 2013

Norwegian manufacturing went down by 0.6 per cent from September to October 2013, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Ships, boats and oil platforms experienced a decline in production equivalent to 5.6 per cent, while industries such as food and food products and non-ferrous metals had an increase in production.

Growth in manufacturing output from October 2012 to October 2013

Production in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 2.6 per cent from October 2012 to October 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Industries such as food and food products, non-ferrous metals, as well as machinery and equipment have seen a production growth in this period. On the other hand, paper and paper products, together with repair and installation of machinery had a decline in production.

Norway and the euro area

There was a 3.2 per cent increase in Norwegian manufacturing output from September 2012 to September 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Production in manufacturing industries in the euro area increased by 1.2 per cent in the same period, according to calendar-adjusted figures published by Eurostat. However, from August to September 2013, the euro area experienced a production decline equivalent to 0.7 per cent, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Downturn in total industrial production (PII)

The overall production index covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply decreased by 3.4 per cent from August to October 2013 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. The production decline covering these four industries was particularly related to lower extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas. From August to October 2013, the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas decreased by 4.2 per cent compared with the previous three-month period. Several fields had reduced production in October 2013 due to planned maintenance work on the Norwegian continental shelf. For further details, refer to the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate .

Production within electricity supply and manufacturing has also contributed negatively to the figures, with a decline of 7.1 and 0.4 per cent respectively, compared with the previous three-month period.
