The majority of Norwegian manufacturing industries have seen a decline in production from September to November 2013 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. This applies to industries such as fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment, ships, boats and oil platforms, as well as repair and installation of machinery. Somewhat reduced activity linked to the Norwegian continental shelf towards the end of 2013 together with increased international competition for new contracts are key factors behind the decline in these industries. However, the lower production must also be seen in conjunction with the record high output levels in June and July 2013.

Moreover, production within industries such as food and food products, wood and wood products together with printing and reproduction also went down from September to November 2013 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. This can be related to somewhat lower domestic demand, and a slightly lower production of fish and fish products and production of feed.

On the other hand, non- ferrous metals saw an output increase equivalent to 5.6 per cent from September to November 2013, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Higher demand from abroad can explain some of this growth. In the same period, production within basic chemicals decreased by 2.7 per cent. This was partly due to shutdowns for planned maintenance among the main producers.

Decline in manufacturing from October to November 2013

Norwegian manufacturing went down by 0.2 per cent from October to November 2013, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Food, food products and beverages experienced a decline in production, while industries such as machinery and equipment together with ships, boats and oil platforms saw an output increase.

Growth in manufacturing output from November 2012 to November 2013

Production in Norwegian manufacturing went up by 2.1 per cent from November 2012 to November 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures . Machinery and equipment experienced a solid production growth in this period, while paper and paper products had a clear production downturn.

Norway and the euro area

There was a 2.6 per cent increase in Norwegian manufacturing output from October 2012 to October 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Production in manufacturing industries in the euro area increased by 0.6 per cent in the same period, according to calendar-adjusted figures published by Eurostat. However, from September to October 2013, the euro area experienced a production decline equivalent to 0.7 per cent, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Downturn in total industrial production (PII)

The overall production index covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply decreased by 3.5 per cent from September to November 2013 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. All the four main industries contributed negatively to the figures.

The changes in total industrial production (PII) were particularly related to lower extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas. From September to November 2013, the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas decreased by 6.5 and 6.0 per cent respectively compared with the previous three-month period. However, according to seasonally-adjusted figures, there was a solid increase in extraction of crude petroleum from October to November 2013, despite reduced activity on some fields due to maintenance work. For further details, refer to the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate .

Production within Norwegian electricity supply decreased by 6.3 per cent from September to November 2013 compared with the previous three-month period.
