Oil-driven growth in 2012

After growth in manufacturing, mining and quarrying almost halted in 2011, the industry experienced an oil-driven rise of 3.8 per cent in 2012.

Value added, measured by value added at factor cost , rose by just less than NOK 193 billion in 2012.

There was a slight increase in employment and the number of establishments in manufacturing, quarrying and mining in 2012. Employment amounted to about 235 000 persons, up by 0.9 per cent from 2011. The number of establishments increased by a mere 0.3 per cent to almost 20 000.

Within the mining and quarrying industry, value added grew by 2.4 per cent to NOK 5.1 billion. For the manufacturing industry, valued added increased by 3.8 per cent to NOK 187.7 billion.

Within each industry there are somewhat greater variations in growth.

High growth in fabricated metal products and in oil-related industries

In monetary terms, the fabricated metal products and the oil-related machine repair and installation industry had the highest growth. The fabricated metal products industry experienced an increase in value added to NOK 18.1 billion; a large increase of 13.0 per cent compared to 2011. Employment growth was about 3.8 per cent.

Value added in the repair and installation industry increased to NOK 14.6 billion; a sharp increase of 15.2 per cent compared to 2011. Growth in employment was 5.7 per cent. The shipbuilding and oil platform-building industry experienced continued growth in 2012, with an increase in value added from NOK 16.9 billion to NOK 17.5 billion. This is approximately 3.3 per cent. The machinery and equipment industry experienced a growth of 6.2 per cent.

Two industries pulled the growth down

Two industries pulled down the growth in the total value added for the manufacturing industries. In monetary terms, oil refining, chemical and pharmaceutical industries experienced the sharpest fall in value added. Growth plummeted by 10.6 per cent from NOK 19.2 billion to NOK 17.2 billion. Basic metals experienced a decline of 5.9 per cent, from NOK 10.0 billion in 2011 to NOK 9.4 billion in 2012.

Rogaland has the highest value added

In monetary terms, Rogaland had the greatest growth in value added in manufacturing, quarrying and mining. Value added rose from NOK 20.7 billion in 2011 to about NOK 23.4 billion in 2012. In Oslo, growth in value added surged by 21.8 per cent, from NOK 10.4 billion in 2011 to about NOK 12.7 billion. Value added in Hordaland increased from NOK 20.9 billion to NOK 22.4 billion, whereby the county fell to second place after Rogaland.

Vest-Agder experienced the sharpest decline in value added in monetary terms. Value added shrank from NOK 16.2 billion to NOK 14.3 billion; a reduction of 11.4 per cent.

The enterprises had a turnover of NOK 712 billion

There were approximately 18 200 enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industries in 2012. The enterprises, including establishments that are located in other industries, employed about 236 500 people and had a total turnover of NOK 712 billion. This is approximately in line with preliminary figures that were published in November 2013. From 2011 to 2012, value added in the enterprises increased by 3.9 per cent to just below NOK 193 billion.
