In 2013, employment increased in manufacturing, mining and quarrying to about 239 000 people. This is around 4 000 more people than in 2012.

Several industries fostered manufacturing growth in 2013

In 2013, growth measured in value added at factor prices was still strong in the construction of ships, boats and oil platforms. Value added rose by 10.8 per cent to NOK 19.4 billion. Machine repair and installation also experienced a solid growth of 14.9 per cent from NOK 14.6 billion to NOK 16.8 billion in 2013.

Value added in refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceutical industries was back at the 2011 level following a decline in 2012. Value added increased by 11.3 per cent to NOK 19.1 billion from NOK 17.2 billion in 2012.

In NOK terms, the food, beverage and tobacco industry experienced the largest increase in value added to NOK 37.4 billion. Growth increased by 6.2 per cent. It was mainly the processing and preserving of fish that contributed to the growth.

Basic metals dragged down growth

The basic metals industry suffered the largest decrease in value added in both NOK terms and percentage terms. Value added decreased by 16.1 per cent from NOK 9.4 billion to NOK 7.9 billion in 2013. The fall in production value was due to lower market prices.

The deterioration continued in the paper and paper products industry, with a decrease in growth of 13.9 per cent. The decline in wood and wood products, and the printing and graphics industry was somewhat smaller, at 5.3 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively.

Rogaland added most in 2013

In 2013, the county of Rogaland still generated the highest value added with NOK 24.0 billion. In NOK terms, the county of Akershus boosted growth in value added, up from NOK 11.3 billion in 2012 to about NOK 13.3 billion in 2013. Hordaland experienced the sharpest decline in value in NOK terms.

Slight decrease in the number of enterprises

Enterprise figures confirm that there were around 18 000 enterprises in manufacturing, mining and quarrying in 2013. This is an annualised decrease of 1.2 per cent. Enterprises had a turnover of NOK 741 billion at the end of the year; an increase of 4.1 per cent.
