Production down in manufacturing

The gross value of production for manufacturing went down from 2001, while the value added measured in market prizes was kept stable. The employment in manufacturing was still decreasing, but not as much as for 2001

The gross value of production measured in current prices decreased by NOK 10.1 billion or 2.0 per cent from 2001 to 2002 and totalled NOK 498.3 billion. Costs of goods and services consumed went down by NOK 10.7 billion or 3.0 per cent.

Production value by industry subsection. 2001-2002. NOK billion

The largest declines are found in basic metal production and production of basic chemicals and refined petroleum products. The value of production for these industries went down by NOK 6.9 billion and NOK 6.0 billion respectively. Low aluminium prizes may explain some of the decline in metal production. For the paper industry the value of production went down by NOK 3.6 billion, which also may be explained by a decrease of prizes.

The production of food, beverages and tobacco has the largest rise in value of production, NOK 5.1 billion. The production of oil platforms increased its value of production by 3.1 billion, and the production of metal products increased its value of production by 1.7 billion. These industries also increased their costs of goods and services consumed.

Value added kept stable

Value added measured in market prices increased by only 0.4 per cent in 2002, in spite of the fact that production decreased by 2.0 per cent. The value added for manufacturing, mining and quarrying totalled 152.5 billion in 2002, which is 0.6 billion more than in 2001

The total wage costs went up by 3.4 per cent from 2000 to 2001, while the increase in wage cost per employee was 4.8 per cent.

Investments grew

After some years with low investment figures, the gross investment rose by 14.5 per cent or NOK 2.4 billion from 2001 to 2002.

This may be explained by a strong ascent in the investments in the aluminium manufacturing. The gross investments for this industry increased by 3.0 billion.

In the production of fish and fish products, in mining and quarrying and in the production of electrical and optical equipment, the gross investments fall by NOK 441, 339 and 279 million respectively.

Employment still down

Employment in manufacturing, mining and quarrying fell from 276 803 in 2001 to 272 889 in 2001, a decline by 1.3 per cent. The employment figures are lower than the preliminary figures for 2002.

Publishing and basic metal production lost 1600 and 1000 employed respectively.

The drop in employment came particularly among the largest companies.

More than 60 per cent of the employed in manufacturing, mining and quarrying are working in establishments with more than 50 employed.
