Manufacturing upturn in 2006

The value added in manufacturing and mining and quarrying continued to increase in 2006. The value added rose by 35 per cent between 2002 and 2006, of which a third of the growth took place from 2005 to 2006.

Value added by industry subsection. 2004-2006. NOK billion

In 2006, value added in manufacturing and mining and quarrying totalled NOK 208 billion. From 2005, value added increased by NOK 22 billion, or 12 per cent, measured in current prices.

Increased value added in nearly all industry subsections

Food products, beverages and tobacco were the largest contributors to value added, accounting for NOK 43 billion in 2006 and 6 per cent from 2005 to 2006. Refined petroleum products and chemical products had a value added of NOK 23 billion in 2006. This industry subsection has seen a doubling of value added since 2002. Large sectors such as production of machinery and equipment, building of oil platforms and production of basic metals also experienced a considerable growth in value added from 2005 to 2006.

Increase in investments

Gross investment in manufacturing, mining and quarrying totalled NOK 20 billion in 2006. The largest investments were made in refined petroleum products and chemical products, and food products and beverages and tobacco. These industries accounted for nearly 34 per cent of total investments.

Employment up in several industries

Manufacturing, mining and quarrying employed nearly 269 000 people in 2006. This is an increase of more than 9 000 compared with 2005. Various sectors experienced increased employment in 2006 following years of decline. All counties apart from Østfold, Troms and Finnmark experienced growth in employment from 2005 to 2006. The growth was largest in Nord-Trøndelag. However, Rogaland is still the largest county with regards to manufacturing employment (31 900 in 2006, up 6 per cent from 2005).

The majority of the rise in employment took place in companies with more than 200 employees. In this group, employment rose from 70 000 in 2005 to 76 000 in 2006 (8 per cent).
