Weak growth in 2007

Value added for manufacturing, mining and quarrying rose by 3 per cent in 2007, an evident lower growth than for the three previous years.

Increase highest for cost of goods and services consumed

Manufacturing output in 2007 was described as record high (see the index of production ), and the structural data for 2007 also show that total production value for manufacturing, mining and quarrying rose by 14 per cent, or NOK 98 billion, compared to 2006. At the same time, final figures show that cost of goods and services consumed rose by 19 per cent. As a result, the growth in value added at market prices increased by only 3 per cent.

The rise in value added was highest within the machinery and equipment industry, where value added went up by 18 per cent and increased from NOK 18.1 billion in 2006 to NOK 21.4 billion in 2007. Electrical and optical equipment and the metal products industry also experienced an upswing, and together these three industries contributed to a large extent to the increase in total value added.

There were also several industries that experienced a decrease in value added in 2007 compared to 2006. The biggest fall by percentage was recorded in the industry pulp, paper and paper products, with a fall of 16 per cent. Value added for food products, beverages and tobacco decreased by NOK 2.3 billion. This reduction was mainly linked to fish and fish products.

Hordaland was the county that contributed the most to total value added for manufacturing, mining and quarrying in 2007, followed by Rogaland and Oslo. Together, these three contributed with a third of the total value added, despite a decrease in their own value added.

Akershus and Vest-Agder both experienced an upswing in value added by approximately NOK 2.5 billion in 2007, and as a result were the counties with the highest growth. Increase by percentage was 18 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.

Upsurge in investments

Gross investments in 2007 for manufacturing, mining and quarrying amounted to NOK 28.8 billion; an upswing of 46.6 per cent compared with 2006. One of the largest contributors was the mineral products industry, where a large project was finished in 2007. However, as for 2006, it was within food products, beverages and tobacco and refined petroleum products and chemical products the largest investments were made. The investments for these two industries combined accounted for roughly a third of the total investments made in manufacturing, mining and quarrying in 2007.

Highest number of persons employed within food products, beverages and tobacco

Almost 275 000 persons were employed in manufacturing, mining and quarrying in 2007; 3 per cent more than the previous year, and thereby the increase we saw in 2006 continued. Rogaland had the highest number of persons employed within manufacturing, mining and quarrying, while it was Vest-Agder that had the largest percentage growth.

Around 49 000 persons were employed in the industry food products, beverages and tobacco, which means that about a fifth of all persons employed within manufacturing, mining and quarrying in Norway work in this industry. Second largest is the machinery and equipment industry, which employs approximately 26 000. Mining and quarrying is the industry with fewest employees.

Most industries had an increase in number of persons employed in 2007 compared to 2006, but the largest growth was recorded in the machinery and equipment industry where employment rose by 10 per cent.

Important announcement: New industry classification

A new version of Norwegian industry classification (SIC2007) was implemented in January 2009. Structural data for manufacturing, mining and quarrying will be affected as from the publishing of preliminary figures for 2008, which will be published in October 2009. The most important change for these statistics is that publishing and recycling will be moved from manufacturing. In addition, there are some changes that will result in new publication levels. For example, repairs and installations of industrial machinery will be classified as a separate industry under manufacturing.
