Moderate growth in turnover in 2008
Turnover within mining, quarrying and manufacturing rose by 5 per cent from 2007 to 2008, from NOK 739 billion to NOK 777 billion. The largest increase was within the food, beverages and tobacco industry, where turnover went up by NOK 13 billion.
The food, beverages and tobacco industry is still the largest within manufacturing in Norway, and contributed with a fifth of the total turnover in 2008.
The highest growth in percentage was within the mining and quarrying industry, with an upsurge of 22 per cent. High coal price during large parts of 2008 contributed largely to this (see industry statistics for Svalbard ). Machinery and equipment also had a good year, with an increase in turnover from about NOK 63 billion to NOK 76 billion, which equals 20 per cent.
Basic metals experienced a decline in turnover of approximately 10 per cent. One reason for this reduction was the fall in demand due to the financial crisis, which in turn affected the production (see index of production ).
Turnover for the wood and wood products industry decreased with NOK 1.8 billion compared to 2007, which equals a fall of 6 per cent. A reason for this was the effect of the fall in total building activity on output for this industry (see index of production and building statistics ).
Modest increase in employment
A total of 264 000 persons were employed within mining, quarrying and manufacturing in 2008, an increase of somewhat over 1 per cent compared to 2007. The highest growth in percentage was within mining and quarrying and ships, boats oil platforms, where the number of persons employed went up by 9 and 8 per cent respectively.
Approximately half of the manufacturing industries experienced a decline in employment in 2008. The largest fall was within the paper and paper products industry, where employment fell by 10 per cent (about 550 persons) compared to 2007.
Preliminary figuresStructural data, preliminary figures, is published for the enterprise level alone, whereas the final figures are compiled also for the establishments. The figures for the enterprise will usually deviate from figures on establishment level. This is due to the fact that the enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the establishments. Important announcement: New industry classificationA new version of Norwegian industry classification (SIC2007) was implemented in January 2009.. The most important change for these statistics is that publishing and recycling has been moved from manufacturing. In addition, there are some changes that have result in new publication levels. For example, repairs and installations of industrial machinery is classified as a separate industry under manufacturing. For more information about the transition to the new standard, click here. |
