Turnover down in 2009

Turnover within mining, quarrying and manufacturing fell by 9 per cent from 2008 to 2009, from NOK 771 billion to NOK 703 billion. The basic metal industry had a decrease in turnover of NOK 30 billion and was the largest contributor to the overall decrease for manufacturing.

Enterprise turnover by industry, 2008-2009. NOK billion

The food, beverages and tobacco industry was still the largest within manufacturing, and contributed with a fifth of the total turnover in 2009.

One of few industries with growth in 2009 was the machining and equipment industry, increasing turnover by 12 per cent or NOK 9 billion compared with 2008. This industry has in the last years contributed relatively more to manufacturing each year. For 2009, only the food, beverages and tobacco industry had more turnover than machining and equipment.

The slump experienced by most industries in 2009 must be seen with the backdrop of lower prices on their products. The basic metals industry was hit by a substantial decline in metal prices (see producer price index ) that led to the largest decrease in turnover experienced in this decade. In relative terms, transport equipment (except ships, boats and oil platforms) had the worst 2009 with a decrease in turnover of 33 per cent.

A large number of enterprises felt the effect of the financial crisis and this lead to lower turnover in several industries. A more comprehensive look at this is given in the index of production and turnover statistics .

Enterprise employment by industry, 2008-2009

Decrease in employment

A total of 253 000 persons were employed within mining, quarrying and manufacturing in 2009; a decrease of almost 4 per cent compared to 2008. The largest decrease in employment was observed in transport equipment (except ships, boats and oil platforms) with a decline of 28 per cent. Much of this is due to the bankruptcy of several large enterprises, which went bankrupt in late 2008 and early 2009.

Only two out of 17 industries within manufacturing and mining employed more people in 2009 compared with 2008. The increase for repair, installation and machinery can partly be explained by a reclassification of some large enterprises. The only genuine increase in employment was in the machinery and equipment industry, which had 1 300 more employees in 2009, or 6 per cent, compared with 2008.

Preliminary figures

Structural data, preliminary figures, is published for the enterprise level alone, whereas the final figures are compiled also for the establishments. The figures for the enterprise will usually deviate from figures on establishment level. This is due to the fact that the enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry from some of the establishments.
