7 000 000 treatments in Norwegian hospitals

In 2016, fewer than 2 million patients received more than 7 million treatments in Norwegian hospitals. Out-patient consultation is the most commonly used form of treatment, according to new figures for Patient statistics.

The largest group of patients who receive out-patient treatment is cancer patients. Heart disease is most common among patients with in-patient stays, and the majority of patients receiving day treatments have musculoskeletal diseases.

Patients receive different treatments
Many patients get several treatments and often receive different kinds of treatment. Among those who received in-patient treatment in 2016, nearly 70 per cent also received day treatment or out-patient treatment. More than 60 per cent of the day patients received additional treatment. Corresponding figures for patients with in-patient stays are 12 per cent.

Planned treatment more common than non-elective treatment
Treatment at Norwegian hospitals is either planned or non-elective. Overall, planned treatment is more common (about 80 per cent), but it varies. For cancer, 97 per cent of the treatment is planned, while only 32 per cent are planned for injuries, poisoning and other.
