More resources in the municipal health services

There has been a growth in man-years and coverage rates for physicians, physiotherapists, midwives and public health nurses from 1999 to 2000. Measured as man-years, the number of physiotherapists has the increased most.

In 2000, physiotherapists worked 3 614 man-years in the municipal health service, excluding care for the old and disabled people. This was an increase of 194 man-years compared with the previous year, and for the first time the number of man-years by physiotherapists exceeds the man-years by physicians in the municipal health services.

Fewer physiotherapists in institutions for the old and disabled people

In 2000, 355 of all physiotherapy man-years in the municipal health service were assigned to institutions for the elderly and disabled. The number of man-years was reduced from 1999 to 2000. This may however, at least partly, be due to change in the classification of activities in the questionnaires as a result of the introduction of KOSTRA.

Increase in number of physicians

In 2000, a total of 3 579 man-years worked as doctors in the municipal health service, excluding care for the old and disabled people. This was an increase of 52 man-years from 1999.

In 2000 physicians worked 230 man-years in institutions for the elderly and disabled. This accounts for about six per cent of the total labour input of doctors in the municipal health services. The proportion has remained stable in recent years.

More midwives and public health nurses

From 1999 to 2000 the number of man-years of midwives in the municipal health service increased from 269 to 283. Similarly, the number of man-years worked by public health nurses increased from

1 650 to 1 725. Measured as the number of man-years per inhabitant, the least central municipalities have the best access to services from these occupational groups. This is particularly true for midwives, in which the least central municipalities have around four times as many man-years per 10 000 new-borns as the most central municipalities.

Introduction of new questionnaires

The routines for collection off statistics are due to a change. An increasing number of municipalities report the data by new electronic questionnaires (KOSTRA) and this may, at least for some time, affect the stability of results.
