Most operating hours in north
In Nordland ambulances logged 11 928 operating hours per week in 2000. The number of operating hours per week was also high in Finnmark and Troms.
The high number of operating hours must be viewed in conjunction with the fact that this part of the country also has the most ambulances, which in turn is a factor of the huge area covered by these counties. To reach all residents of the county within an acceptable time, counties with the largest area have to have more ambulances. This ratio is also expressed in small counties. In Oslo, weekly operating hours amounted to 1 248 hours last year.
Average distance driven per call is also connected to geographic factors. Ambulances in Sogn og Fjordane, Oppland, Troms and Nord Trøndelag drove an average of more than 100 kilometres per call. The corresponding figures for Oslo and Hordaland were 20 and 34 respectively.
Use of the ambulance service is steadily increasing. In 1994, average ambulance calls per 1 000 inhabitants were 75. In the course of the last five years this has risen steadily. Last year 92 calls were carried out per 1 000 inhabitants on average.
