Housing, transport and recreation are most expensive

In the 2004-2006 period, an average household spent NOK 343,300 on expenditure per year. Housing is taking the largest share of consumption spending, with transport second. Recreation and culture is the third most important expenditure, while spending on food is in fourth place.

Households' consisting of a couple with children older than six years have double the total expenditure of single households. Single households spend 34 per cent of their expenditure on housing, while couples with children spend 25 per cent. Households' expenditure habits as such have not changed much.

Due to small yearly samples, it is only possible to publish results from the survey for groups of households when samples for three years are combined.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel make up the largest expenditure item, at NOK 97,500 on average per household per year in the period. This amounts to 28.4 per cent of total spending, i.e. more than a quarter.

Spending on transport appears to have stabilised its share of the total. In the 2004-2006 period, transport amounted to approximately one-sixth of household spending, at NOK 63,100.

The third largest item of household spending is recreation and culture, at NOK 41,300, with a share of 12 per cent in the period.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages comprise on average NOK 39,000 per household per year or 11 per cent in the period 2004-2006.

The share of spending on clothing and footwear has been stable over the past years, and is at around five per cent for the average household in the period 2004-2006. The average household spent NOK 18,500 on clothing and footwear per year in the period.

Furniture and household equipment make up 6 per cent of spending on average. Average household spending is stable at NOK 21,300.

Private expenditure on health care is NOK 10,100, or 3 per cent of spending per year in the period.

Spending on communication (postage and telephone services) comprises 2.5 per cent of expenditure or NOK 8,600 per year for the average household.

Education is a small expenditure item for the average household, at NOK 1,000 in the period 2004-2006 or 0.3 per cent of spending.
