A total of 10 300 persons were naturalised in 2018, which was a fall of over 50 per cent from the year before. The largest decline in absolute numbers was among Asian citizens, whose naturalisation went down by 6 300 persons in 2018.

5 per cent more with refugee background
A total of 228 200 persons with a refugee background were living in Norway on 1 January 2018. This represented 31 per cent of all migrants, and 4.3 per cent of the total population.

Many immigrate for family reasons
A total of 42 100 persons with non-Nordic citizenship immigrated to Norway in 2017 - 9 000 fewer than the year before. Family is now the most common reason for immigrating to Norway.

Strong decline in refugee migration
Around 7 800 refugees migrated to Norway in 2017. This is almost half the number compared to the previous year. Much of the reason is a strong decline in refugees from Syria.
