Another record high for salmon

In 2016, the first-hand value of Norwegian farmed salmon came to NOK 60 billion. This is a quadrupling in 10 years, and an increase of 35 per cent from the year before. At the same time, the quantity of salmon sold decreased by 5 per cent.

The total production of Norwegian fish farming in 2016 was 1.33 million tonnes, corresponding to a first-hand value of NOK 63.9 billion. This is a decrease of 4 per cent for produced quantity and an increase of 36 per cent for first-hand value.

Rise in sales prices of salmon

Ninety-three per cent of the production in fish farming in 2016 was reared salmon. In total, 1.24 million tonnes of salmon were produced, down 5 per cent from the year before. However, a sharp rise in the sales prices from 2015 to 2016 led to a record high first-hand value. The average price per kilo of salmon was NOK 48.53 in 2016, up 42 per cent from the year before.

More production of trout

For reared trout, the produced quantity was 87 500 tonnes in 2016; an increase of 20 per cent from 2015. The total first-hand value for rainbow trout and other reared trout was NOK 3.7 billion, up 65 per cent from the year before. The average price per kilo increased from NOK 30.43 in 2015 to NOK 41.99 in 2016.

Increased sales of other species

A total of 2 473 tonnes of species other than salmon and trout were sold in 2016, at a corresponding first-hand value of NOK 211 million. This is an increase of 44 per cent for quantity and 20 per cent for value.

Overall, 7 560 persons were engaged in aquaculture production in 2016, broken down into 5 510 in production of fish for food, 1 905 in hatcheries and fingerling production and 145 in shellfish farming.

New conversion factor from 2000

Quantity is quoted as round weight. Fish that is delivered gutted is converted into round weight. The conversion factors from NS 9417 were adopted in 2000. The new conversion factors are as follows, with the old factors in parenthesis: salmon gutted with head - 1.125 (1.125), salmon gutted and decapitated - 1.266 (1.2857), rainbow trout gutted with head - 1.135 (1.125) and rainbow trout gutted and decapitated - 1.266 (1.2857).
