Increase in meat production

A total of 344 100 tonnes of meat from domestic animals were approved for human consumption in 2016, an increase of 3.5 per cent1 from the previous year, according to new figures for Meat production.

In total, 137 700 tonnes of pork, 98 300 tonnes of poultry, 81 700 tonnes of beef and veal and 26 000 tonnes of mutton and lamb were approved in 2016. Pork accounted for 40 per cent of the total meat production in 2016, compared to poultry and beef with 29 and 24 per cent respectively.

The poultry meat production increased by 5 800 tonnes from 2015 to 2016, while the production of meat from pigs increased by 3 000 tonnes. The production of meat from cattle increased by 2 000 tonnes from 2015 to 2016, and the production of mutton and lamb rose by 400 tonnes.

In 2016, one quarter of the total meat quantity was produced in the county of Rogaland. The counties Nord-Trøndelag and Hedmark accounted for 13 per cent and 12 per cent of the production respectively.
