Lower grain yields in 2016

The total grain production in 2016 is estimated at 1 210 000 tonnes, a decrease of 11 per cent from the year before.

According to preliminary estimates from The Norwegian Agricultural Purchasing and Marketing Co-operation, the total grain harvest consisted of 286 000 tonnes of wheat, 574 000 tonnes of barley, 330 000 tonnes of oats and 20 000 tonnes of rye in 2016.
The average decare yields of barley and oats were 418 kg and 434 kg respectively in 2016. The average decare yield of wheat was calculated to 428 kg.
The area of barley increased by 138 900 decares to a total of 1.37 million decares in 2016, and the area of oats by 127 100 decares to 759 700 decares. The area of wheat sown decreased by 189 700 decares to 667 900 decares, and the area of rye by 58 600 decares to 45 500.
A total of 11 200 holdings grew grain in 2016, and the average grain area per holding was 255 decares, compared with 251 decares the year before.
