Decrease in river catch of salmon

According to preliminary figures, the total river catch of salmon, sea trout and migratory char amounted to 412 tonnes in 2007. This is 87 tonnes or 17 per cent less than in 2006. The catch of small salmon was nearly halved.

The total catch consisted of 338 tonnes of salmon and 74 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2006, the decrease was 20 per cent for salmon and 6 per cent for the two other species. The catch of small salmon (less than 3 kilos) and salmon between 3 and 7 kilos decreased by 48 and 18 per cent respectively, while the catch of salmon above 7 kilos increased by 30 per cent.

The average weight of salmon caught was 3.5 kilos in 2007, against 3.0 kilos in 2006. 25 per cent of the salmon weighed less than 3 kilos, 42 per cent between 3 and 7 kilos and 33 per cent above 7 kilos. The corresponding figures for 2006 were 38, 42 and 20 per cent respectively.

Tana and its tributaries was the most important river system in 2007, with a catch of 48.1 tonnes. This is 1.6 tonnes less than in 2006. Next in line were Gaula, Orkla, Namsenvassdraget and Altaelva.
