Drop in river catch of salmon

The total river catch of salmon, sea trout and migratory char amounted to 370 tonnes in 2009. This is 111 tonnes, or 23 per cent, less than in 2008.

The total catch consisted of 312 tonnes of salmon and 59 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2008, the decrease was 27 per cent for salmon, while the two other species increased by 5 per cent.

The average weight of salmon caught was 3.5 kilos in 2009, against 3.8 kilos in 2008. 28 per cent of the salmon weighed less than 3 kilos, 34 per cent between 3 and 7 kilos and 38 per cent above 7 kilos.

The catch in Tana and its tributaries was nearly halved compared with 2008, but this was still the most important river system in 2009. Next in line were Gaula, Namsenvassdraget, Orkla and Altaelva.

Some catch and release

For the first time reports of data on catch and release were collected. In 2009, 10 100 salmon, sea trout and migratory char were caught and let into the river again. Orkla and Gaula were the most important rivers, with catch and release of 1 196 and 1 177 fishes respectively.

Sør-Trøndelag was the county where most fishes were let into the rivers again, in total 1 762 salmon and 628 sea trout. Next in line were Finnmark and Sogn og Fjordane.

Average weight for catch and release salmon was 4.8 kilo and for sea trout and migratory char 1.0 kilo.
