Increase in landed value - stable fish catch
According to preliminary figures Norwegian vessels delivered 2.5 million tonnes of fish in 2004, a decrease of nearly 2 per cent. Including crustaceans and molluscs, the landed value amounted to NOK 10.1 billion compared with NOK 8.8 billion in 2003.
Compared with preliminary figures of 2003 the herring catches increased by 10 per cent, and landed value amounted to NOK 2.0 billion, an increase by 43 per cent. This corresponds to 25 per cent of the total catch and 20 per cent of the total landed value in 2004.
The cod catch came to 226 000 tonnes worth NOK 2.7 billion. This catch accounts for 9 per cent of the total catch quantity and 26 per cent of the value. Measured by the landed value of catch, cod fishing is the most important of the fisheries. Cod and haddock figures include the fishing preformed by Norwegian vessels on Russian quotas.
In 2004, 37 per cent of the catch was frozen or minced, and fresh fish accounted for 10 per cent. 43 per cent was made into meal, oil and animal food. The entire catch of Norway pout, blue whiting, sand eel and a larger part of the capelin catch are used to manufacture these products.
Foreign vessels delivered 265 000 tonnes of fish and crustaceans in Norway in 2004. Total value of the foreign landings came to NOK 1.6 billion.
These statistics are based on data from the Directorate of Fisheries as of 21 January 2005, and the statistics are released semi-annually.
