The catch of herring in 2005 turned out 21 per cent higher than the year before. The landed value of the herring increased by 42 per cent and came to NOK 2.8 billion. Herring formed 25 per cent of the total landed value by Norwegian vessels in 2005.
Preliminary figures as of 23 January 2006 show that Norwegian vessels delivered 2.4 million tonnes of fish in 2005, a decrease by nearly 6 per cent compared with the previous year. Including crustaceans and molluscs, the landed value amounted to NOK 11.5 billion, as compared with NOK 10.4 billion in 2004.
Cod most important

Measured by the landed value of catch, cod fishing is the most important of fisheries. Cod and haddock figures include the fishing preformed by Norwegian vessels on Russian quotas.

In 2005, 51 per cent of the catch was frozen or minced, and fresh fish accounted for 8 per cent. 32 per cent was made into meal, oil and animal food. The entire catch of Norway pout, blue whiting and sand eel are used to manufacture these products.
Foreign vessels delivered 169 000 tonnes of fish and crustaceans in Norway in 2005. Total value of the foreign landings was NOK 1.6 billion.
The statistics are based on data from the Directorate of Fisheries and are released semi-annually.
