Less catch, increase in landed value

Norwegian vessels delivered 1.3 million tonnes of fish during the first six months of 2006, down 11 per cent compared to the same period last year. Including crustaceans and molluscs, the landed value amounted to NOK 5.9 billion, an increase of 6 per cent compared with the first six months of 2005.

The cod catch decreased by 7 per cent, and came to 155 000 tonnes, worth NOK 2.2 billion. This accounts for 12 per cent of the total catch quantity and 37 per cent of the catch value. Measured by the landed value of catch, cod fishing is the most important of fisheries. Cod and haddock figures include the fishing preformed by Norwegian vessels on Russian quotas.

The herring catch came to the same amount as in the first half of 2005. Landed value of herring decreased from NOK 1.1 billion to NOK 960 million. This corresponds to 22 per cent of the total catch and 16 per cent of the total landed value in 2006.

The catch of blue whiting decreased by 13 per cent, to 585 000 tonnes and accounted for 45 per cent of the total catch in the first six month of 2006.

47 per cent of the total catch was made into meal, oil and animal food, whereas 32 per cent was frozen or minced and 10 per cent was salted.
