Fewer dairy cows
The number of dairy cows decreased by 4 500 to 240 500 from 2010 to 2011, while the number of beef cows increased by 2 400 to 64 000.
As per 1 January 2011, a total of 857 200 cattle were registered; a decrease of 2 per cent from the year before. The number of holdings with dairy cows dropped by 700 to 11 0001. The number of holdings with beef cows remained at 5 000.
Fewer livestock producers
From 2010 to 2011, the number of livestock producers fell by 4 per cent to a total of 31 100. The number of holdings with dairy goats dropped by 7 per cent, while the decline in the number of holdings with pigs was 5 per cent.
In the beginning of 2011, 14 600 holdings kept sheep; a decline of 1 per cent from the year before. About 1 900 holdings kept laying hens, while 600 had broilers. The number of holdings with laying hens dropped by 3 per cent from 2010 to 2011, while the decline in the number of broilers was 2 per cent in the same period.
