Livestock production has shown a strong increase in Hedmark from 1989 to 1999, while the agricultural areas in use are about unchanged. In the same period one of three holdings has quitt operating the land themselves. In 1989/1999 the labour input corresponded to 5 800 full-time equivalents.

The number of holdings with agricultural land in use have fallen from 9 100 in 1989 to 6 000 in 1999. The agricultural area at 1.1 million decares shows only minor changes, and the size of the average holding has increased from 118 to 182 decares. The usage of area is almost unchanged.

Livestock production has increased remarkable since 1989, but the number of holdings with animal husbandry has fallen. The number of cattle has increased 23 per cent even if the number dairy cows has decreased 6 per cent. Pigs for breeding have increased 32 per cent, and sheep one year and older 11 per cent. The number of laying hens has also increased a lot since 1989.

In 1989 267 000 decares were rented by 3 600 holdings. The price for land rental is highest in the district of Solør and Hedemarken. Totally it was paid rental for 283 000 decares in 1999, and the total expenditures for land rental were 53 million NOK.

6 100 full-time equivalents in 1998/1999

In agriculture in Hedmark the labour input corresponded to 5 800 full-time equivalents and in forestry at holdings with agricultural land in use 300 full-time equivalents. 4 300 full-time equivalents were conducted by holders and spouses/cohabitants, 600 eq. by family members, and 900 eq. by others.

In adition there are 300 full-time equivalents in supplementary industries that utilise the holdings land, buildings or machinery. Machinery related services are the most important industry.

About 2 300 holdings had labour inputs of one full-time equivalent or more. 900 of these had 2 or more full-time equivalents. At 2 600 holdings the total labour input was less than half a full-time equivalent each.

Of total 10 600 holders and spouses/cohabitants 2 500 worked at least 1 500 man-hours on the holding. In 1989 almost 3 500 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more on the holding.

3 600 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more off the holding, and 4 400 do not have any work outside the holding.
