Oslo and Akershus: 140 000 m2 base area not in use

The final figures from the 1999 census of agriculture show that there were 6 900 farm buildings with a total base area at 1,9 millions m2 in Akershus. All or major parts of the base area was out of use in 800 of the buildings. The unused base area represented 140 000 m2 .

Unused base area is area not used in agriculture or in other businesses than agriculture. The buildings are at holdings with at least 5 decares agricultural area in use, and buildings at other farms or properties are not within the statistics. A considerable part of the buildings at such properties are expected to be out of use.

The average farm building had a base area at 280 m2 . 3 600 of the buildings were built before 1950, while 500 buildings were built in the 1990's.

Much work off the holding

Totally the labour input corresponded to 3 100 full-time equivalents in Akershus. About 1 700 holdings had labour inputs less than a half full-time equivalent, while 1 000 holdings had labour input at one or more full time equivalent. Of total 6 200 holders and spouses/cohabitants 1 100 worked at least 1 500 man-hours on the holding. In 1989 1 700 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more on the holding.

2 800 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more off the holding, and 2 000 did not have any work outside the holding.

Fewer holdings and increased land rental

Number of holdings with agricultural land in use have decreased from 5 000 in 1989 to 3 400 in 1999, a reduction of 31 per cent. The agricultural land in use shows minor changes. Rented land has increased from 189 000 decares in 1989 to 247 000 decares in 1999. In 1999 rented area represented 31 per cent of total land in use. I 1989 about 23 per cent of the land was rented. Totally it was paid 43,5 million NOK for the rental. This represents an average expenditure per decare of 195 NOK. There are great differences between the municipalities.

30 full time equivalents in Oslo

In Oslo 37 holdings operated at least 7 200 decares in 1999. Grain and oil-seed was grown at 4 500 decares, while most of the area was used for meadow. It was registered 4 holdings with cattle and 3 holdings with sheep. In 1998/1999 it was executed labour input corresponding to 30 full time equivalents. 21 of the holdings had labour input less than a half full time equivalent. It is of major importance to note that farmers in Oslo, who operates land in other municipalities, might have been counted with all business in other municipalities than Oslo.
