Rogaland: Livestock-county number one
52 000 dairy cows, 120 000 other cattle, 21 000 breeding pigs, 158 000 sheep one year and older and 800 000 laying hens. These figures make the county of Rogaland to livestock-county number one. It is final figures from the 1999 census of agriculture that indicates this.
The numbers of domestic animals show that one of six cows, one of five breeding pigs, one of six sheep and one of four laying hens are situated in Rogaland. From 989 to 1999 the number of cattle has increased with 10 000 even if the number of dairy cows has fallen slightly. The number of breeding pigs has increased by 3 000, while the number of laying hens has been reduced by 125 000 animals. The number of sheep is unchanged in the period. 92 per cent out of 6 200 holdings operate a kind of animal husbandry.
1 of 5 holdings shut down
In 1999 6 200 holdings operated at least 5 decares agricultural area. Since 1989 the number of holdings has fallen about 20 per cent. It is the smallest farms that no longer operate land. The remaining farms are becoming bigger. The average holding operated in 1999 had 156 decares agricultural area. This is an increase of 46 decares since 1989. In ten years the number of holdings with at least 200 decares has increased with 80 per cent. The number of holdings with less than 50 decares has been cut into half.
Since 1989 the agricultural area has increased more than 120 000 decares to 970 000 decares. It is the increase in surface cultivated land that causes the change. Higher demands for area for spreading animal manure and changes in rules for receiving governmental subsidies before a real increase in agricultural land, are probably the most important causes to the remarkable changes.
9 400 full-time equivalents
At the holdings in Rogaland the labour input corresponded to 9 400 full-time equivalents. 2 400 holdings had labour inputs between one and two full-time equivalent. 1 700 holdings had labour inputs of two full-time equivalents or more. Of totally 11 100 holders and spouse/cohabitants 4 200 worked at least 1 500 man-hours on the holding. In 1989 5 600 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more on the holding.
Three fourths of the labour input were conducted by the holders themselves, while family members and other regularly and temporarily help conducted the rest.
460 000 decares cultivated meadow
Cultivated meadow for mowing and pasturing represents about half of the total agricultural area in Rogaland. 43 per cent of the meadow was between 2 and 4 years of age, while 27 per cent was between 5 and 9 years. Only 14 per cent of the area was 10 years and older.
Changes in fertilising
Out of 5 800 holdings with cultivated meadow, 5 600 supplied artificial fertilisers. In 1989 every third farmer supplied the cultivated meadow area 2.5 kg phosphorous or more per decare. In 1999 this part decreased to 15 per cent. For nitrogen the changes are different. A relative greater part supplies less than 20-kg nitrogen per decare.
