Troms: Still largest in goatproduction

The goatfarmers in Troms consolidated the county's position as goatcounty number one. More than 20 000, or 30 per cent of all goats, were registered in Troms. In 1999 there were 260 holdings with goatproduction in the county. Ten years earlier the number of producers was 336.

If goatproduction in Troms represented a great part in relation to the whole country, other livestock productions were rather moderate. In 1999 more than 700 holdings had 20 500 cattle, 500 holdings had 7 000 dairy cows, 60 holdings had 1 400 breeding pigs and 1 100 holdings had almost 55 000 sheep one year and older. The changes in the number of animals have been small, except pigs for breeding. The number of holdings with livestock has decreased for most of the animals.

2 100 holdings with area in use

2 100 holdings had at least 5 decares agricultural area in use in 1999. Since 1989 the number of holdings have fallen with more than 1 000. The remaining holdings are bigger, and the number of holdings that operated 200 decares or more, was more than doubled to 500 holdings in 1999. The average holding has in the ten-year period increased by 55 decares to 133 decares.

Land rental increased from 1989 to 1999. 84 000 decares were rented in 1989, representing 34 per cent of all land in use. Ten years later three out of four holdings rented land. All in all it was paid 2,0 million NOK for land rental, which correspond to 41 NOK per decare.

2 500 full time equivalents

All in all the labour input at the holdings corresponded to 2 500 full time equivalents in 1998/1999. At more than half of the 2 000 holdings, the labour input corresponded to one full time equivalents or more, while some less than every fourth holding had labour input corresponding to less than half a full time equivalent each.

Few with agricultural training or education

At 29 per cent of the holdings, one or both holders had a kind of agricultural training or education. The part increased since 1989 when 17 per cent of the holdings had at least one trained or educated holder. In 1999 511 men and 154 women had a kind of agricultural training or education. Three out of four were educated as agronomist or at higher level.
