Lowest grain yields since 1976

The total grain production in 2013 is estimated at 985 100 tonnes; a decrease of 12 per cent from the year before, which was also low.

According to preliminary estimates from The Norwegian Agricultural Purchasing and Marketing Co-operation, the total grain harvest in 2013 consisted of 199 400 tonnes of wheat, 479 600 tonnes of barley, 213 600 tonnes of oats and 11 400 tonnes of rye.

The average decare yields of barley and oats were 303 kg and 313 kg respectively in 2013. The average decare yield of wheat was calculated to 364 kg.

Increase in the area of barley and winter wheat

The area of wheat dropped by 122 500 decares to a total of 547 300 decares in 2013, and the area of oats by 8 700 decares to 683 500. The area of barley sown increased by 18 800 decares to 1.58 million decares.

A total of 11 500 holdings grew grain in 2012, and the average grain area per holding was 246 decares, compared with 235 decares the year before.
