Reduced grain production

The total grain production in 2001 was 1.2 million tons, a decrease of 8 per cent from the year before. Including all grain crops, average grain yield per decare was 375 kilos in average, compared with 401 kilos one year earlier.

Total production of wheat, barley and oats. 1989, 1995-2001*. 1 000 tons

A total of 251 800 tons of wheat, 611 800 tons of barley and 332 900 tons of oats were harvested in 2001. Most grain was grown in the eastern part of the country, in the counties Akershus, Østfold and Hedmark. These three counties accounted for 43 per cent of holdings with grain and oil seeds and 59 per cent of the grain area. 67 per cent of the total grain production was harvested in these counties.

The total wheat area decreased a little from 679 200 decares in 2000 to 631 200 decares in 2001. The total wheat production is estimated to 251 800 tons, corresponding to a per decare yield of 399 kilos.

The area of oats sown was reduced by 116 700 decares to 827 500 decares in 2001, a decline of 12 per cent from the year before. The barley area increased by 119 400 decares to 1.7 million decares. The average decare yield of barley was 355 kilos, almost the same as the year before The average decare yield of oats was reduced from 420 to 402 kilos.

Holdings by area used for grain and oil seeds. 1989 and 2001

The number of holdings growing grain and oil seeds was reduced by 800 from the year before to 19 400 in 2001. Because the total grain area has changed little, the average grain area per holding increased from 105 decares in 1989 to 166 decares in 2001.
