Fewer living on farms
In 2013, 408 000 persons resided on agricultural and forestry properties. From 2006 to 2013, this figure fell by 38 500. One in five properties with a dwelling were uninhabited.

A total of 186 000 agricultural and forestry properties are registered, of which 150 000 have dwellings. In 2013, one in five of these properties with a dwelling were uninhabited.
Only 4 per cent agricultural land
The total area of agricultural and forestry properties amounted to 248 million decares in 2013, with an average of 1 300 decares. Agricultural land accounts for 4 per cent and productive forest land for 28 per cent. Other area types comprise unproductive forest land, wetland, bare rock, open firm ground, inland water, roads etc. One in three properties covered less than 100 decares.
One in five buildings built before 1900
A total of one million buildings are situated on agricultural and forestry properties . In total, 219 000 of these buildings were built before 1900 and are registered in the national register of old and protected buildings ( SEFRAK ). Almost 60 per cent of the buildings in this register are situated on an agricultural and forestry property.
One in five properties had more than one owner
Most agricultural and forestry properties have one owner. Of the 28 000 properties with two owners, two out of three are owned by spouses. A total of 9 000 properties have more than two owners, and the average is 4.6.
The share of female owners of agricultural and forestry properties has increased slowly. In 2013, 26 per cent of the properties had a female owner. About 68 per cent of the properties were owned by a man, while 6 per cent had an impersonal or deceased owner.
On average, the female owners were almost 60 years old, while the male owners were 57 years old.
