Small agricultural and forestry properties depopulated
Small agricultural and forestry properties without an agricultural holding are often depopulated. More than one half of the agricultural properties have less than 5 hectares of agricultural area. In 2009, almost one third of these properties were depopulated. For agricultural properties with 10-20 hectares of agricultural area, the corresponding figure was 7 per cent. For properties with a larger agricultural area, the share of depopulated properties was even less.

Fewer depopulated farms in densely populated municipalities
Slightly more than the half of the Norwegian population lives in a municipality with more than 25 000 inhabitants. These municipalities are most often centrally situated and comprise 11 per cent of the agricultural and forestry properties. Fourteen per cent of the agricultural and forestry properties with dwelling were depopulated in these municipalities, while the corresponding share in municipalities with less than 2 500 inhabitants was 31 per cent.
One in ten lived on an agricultural and forestry property
In 2009, 9 per cent of the inhabitants lived in an agricultural and forestry property. In the county of Sogn og Fjordane in the western part of Norway, one in four lived in an agricultural and forestry property, while the corresponding figure for the more central counties of Oslo and Akershus was 2 per cent.
One million buildings
A total of more than one million buildings are situated at an agricultural and forestry property, and almost half of them are agricultural buildings.
BackgroundThe statistics are built on data from several administrative registers, of which the Farm Register is the basis. A quality improvement of areas and units in the Farm Register is currently being carried out at municipality level. This is resulting in changes that do not necessarily show the real change from one year to another. Therefore, detailed figures at municipality level are not published every year. |
