Fewer man-years in agriculture

The labour input on holdings with agriculture was 150.2 million man-hours in the period 1s tJune 2000- 31s tMay 2001, an average of 2 300 man-hours per holding. This is a decrease of 9 per cent, or 8 200 man-years, in two years.

Total labour input on holdings with agriculture has dropped from 166 million man-hours in 1998/1999 to 150 million man-hours in 2000/2001. This represents a fall of 9 per cent or 8 200 full time man-years.

91 per cent of the labour input was carried out in agriculture and horticulture, 3 per cent in forestry and 6 per cent in supplementary industries. Supplementary industries are activities that utilize the holdings land, buildings or machinery.

The labour input in agriculture and horticulture corresponded to 73 200 full time man-years in 2000/2001. The holders approved for 77 per cent of the labour input, while family members, regular and temporary employees made up the rest.

On average 1.1 full time man-years was worked per holding. Half of the holdings had labour input corresponding to one full time man-years or more, while one out of four had labour input corresponding to less than half a full time man-year.
