Record-low catch in sea fishing of salmon

According to preliminary figures, the total catch of wild salmon and sea trout in the Norwegian fjords amounted to 388 tonnes in 2008. This is 50 tonnes, or 12 per cent, less than in 2007.

As from 2008 the salmon fisheries with stationary gear in the sea have been strongly regulated. The fishing season is reduced, and has led to less catch in most of the counties.

The average weight was 4.7 kilo in 2008, as compared with 4.8 the year before. 17 per cent of the salmon caught weighed under 3 kilos, 42 per cent between 3-7 kilos and 41 per cent over 7 kilos.

Finnmark is the most important county for sea catches of salmon, with a total catch of 211 tonnes in 2008. This amounts to 55 per cent of the total catch.
