Decrease in sea fishing of salmon

In 2002, the total catch of wild salmon and sea trout in the Norwegian fjords amounted to 597 tonnes, of which 587 was salmon. Compared with 2001, the catch has decreased by 112 tonnes.

The average size of the salmon caught was considerably larger than in previous years. The average weight was 4.3 kilo in 2002, as compared to 3.8 the year before. 21 per cent of the salmon caught weighed under 3 kilos, 52 per cent between 3-7 kilos and 28 per cent over 7 kilos.

Finnmark is the most important county for sea catches of salmon, with a total catch of 203 tonnes in 2002. Except for Østfold, Sør-Trøndelag and Nordland, there has been a decrease in all counties.
