Further drop in sea catch of salmon

The total catch of wild salmon and sea trout in the Norwegian fjords amounted to slightly less than 270 tonnes in 2010. This is 22 tonnes, or 8 per cent, less than in 2009.

As from 2008, the salmon fisheries with stationary gear in the sea have been strongly regulated. This resulted in record low catches in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, new and more strict regulations were introduced. This led to a further reduction in catches this year. In 2010 the catches decreased most in the counties of Nordland and Sogn og Fjordane.

The average weight of salmon was 4.2 kg in 2010, compared with 4.6 kg the year before. Twenty-four per cent of the salmon caught weighed under 3 kg, 44 per cent between 3-7 kg and 32 per cent over 7 kg.

Half the catch taken in Finnmark

Finnmark is the most important county for sea catches of salmon, with a total catch of 133 tonnes in 2010. This amounted to 50 per cent of the total catch of salmon.

14.6 tonnes of escaped farmed fish

In the coastal counties from Rogaland to Troms fishing for escaped farmed fish is permitted. The time period for this particular fishing is between 5 August and 28 February. The total catch in 2009/2010 was 14.6 tonnes, of which 14.4 tonnes were salmon and 0.2 tonnes were sea trout. This is 7 tonnes, or 32 per cent, less than the previous period. The average weight for salmon was 3.8 kg, and 2.6 kg for sea trout.
