Decline in meat production

119 700 tons of meat were approved for human consumption during first half year 2001. This represents a fall of 7 000 tons, or 6 per cent, compared with the same period last year.

52 000 tons pork, 42600 tons beef and veal and 20 900 tons poultry meat were approved during first half year 2001. The production of meat from cattle and poultry decreased with 13 and 1 per cent, respectively. The production of pork was almost the same as last year.

Pig and poultry accounted for 51 per cent of the approved carcasses during first half year. Compared with first half year 2000, quantities of pork increased with 2 per cent to 43 per cent of total meat production in 2001. Poultry meat increased from 17 to 18 per cent of the total in the same period.

Most meat was approved in Rogaland with 21 900 tons. This county accounted for 18 per cent of overall meat production in Norway first half year 2001. Nord-Trøndelag and Hedmark accounted for respectively 12 and 11 per cent of the production in the same period.
